The audiobooks are created using Artificial Intelligence. They use voices cloned voluntarily by voice actors. The actors own their voices, get paid for their use and can withdraw them if they wish. I would prefer to use – and listen to – live actors but the cost can run into thousands and is prohibitive for small circulation books. ‘AI-diobooks’ cost a hundredth to make. Please let me know what you think.

A fascinating glimpse into the mind of an ordinary Elizabethan. Queen Elizabeth I tasks a young Lancastrian Thomas Dallam with delivering a self-playing organ so spectacular it would woo Sultan Mehmet III, the most powerful man in the world, to the English cause. The Great Turk himself unexpectedly asks Thomas to play it before the glittering Ottoman court. He is the first westerner to peep inside the harem and survive. Finally he makes a dangerous journey home that includes crossing the Greek mainland pursued by brigands. This is his diary.

The Case of Mary Ford is one of the stories in Three Hellish Tales. It’s about a Greek vampire seeking vengeance for murder. Ben Mole made it into a short film shot mainly in our village in Greece with our neighbours playing extras. The dancers are descendants of refugees from Anatolia performing traditional dances. The film won prizes in film festivals across Europe.

Goodbye This early ghost story was made into a short film by Ben Mole a quarter of a century ago It’s set in the house we used to live in.
